With no law to protect;
With everyone to neglect;
Facing a major crisis;
Form days, months, year, and decades;
Facing abuse from all the quarters;
The local gangster; the police;
Facing neglect and threat;
The sovereign state;
The national government;
These vulnerable women are the prime targets;
As I walk down the street;
The empty and busy lane;
The air is hot and humid;
The stench of car fuel;
Red light area as it’s known by;
Dreaded but juxtaposition enjoyed by;
The morning light; the sultry noon; the cold night;
Nothing to give them any respite;
In their murky world;
Living in dilapidated buildings;
The shoebox size rooms;
Unending tragic stories I listen;
Some abandoned by their family;
Some abandoned themselves;
Some forced and deceived;
The willing and unwilling;
The end product remains the same;
The cruel nature of the trade;
The perplexity; the complexity;
A godforsaken place;
Where they inevitably became a part of;
Even their shadow dodges them;
As I enter in one of the rooms;
As I sat on the untidy and ragged quilt;
Baffling questions rises in my mind;
“Why these women suffer this mayhem?”
“Why they don’t stand for their rights?”
“Why isn’t the state doing something for them?”
To end their decades of pain;
Lasting and ever lasts;
Reasons are cited;
Lack of education, lack of financial independence;
But the Constitution doesn’t differentiate among the poor and the rich;
It has given equal rights to every human being;
“Where then the problem lies then?”
As I break free from lingering thoughts;
I hear abusive words from a man;
Maybe it was his mood swing;
May be it was his unsatisfied lust;
Whatever it was;
I was agitated and aghast;
A the girl stands on the edge of the door;
Crying and shivering from the physical abuse;
The drunkard man refuses to pay;
Making creepy lame excuse;
Then I realize where the problem lies;
It’s the societal attitudes;
A major reason for their demise;
